About Snow Day Calculator

Snow Day Calculator is a free, independent website that helps US families, students and teachers answer one question on stormy winter nights: will school be closed tomorrow?

What we do

Our snow day calculator reads the official National Weather Service forecast for your ZIP code and turns the snow, ice, cold and storm timing for the hours before the morning bus run into a percent chance of a closure or delay. Our guides explain how districts actually decide, so the number makes sense.

How the calculator works

  • Forecast data: hourly snowfall, ice, temperature and wind chill from the NWS forecast grid, plus active NWS watches, warnings and advisories for your point.
  • Local climate: a town that sees 80 inches a season needs far more snow to close than one that sees 5 inches, so we compare the forecast with a regional threshold.
  • Your answers: school type, area type and snow days already used nudge the result up or down.
  • Timing: snow falling between about 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. counts more than snow that ends before midnight.

Our editorial standards

Every guide is written from official sources: district closure policies, state education rules and NWS products. We re-check facts each winter and show the last-updated date on every article. We keep caveats like “confirm with your school or district” on purpose, because only your district can make the final call.
